Orthos Secures Major Filtration Contract

May 11, 2026 – Orthos Liquid Systems, Inc. (ORTHOS) announced today it secured a $13 Million contract from Kokosing Industrial to deliver Centurion™ filter underdrains, access hatches, scour air piping, engineering, extensive field service and performance testing for the remaining 72 filter cells at the DC Water Blue Plains Advanced Wastewater Treatment Plant (AWTP). ORTHOS is currently completing an emergency services project with American Contracting & Environmental Services, Inc., for the first eight filter cells of which the underdrain had failed.

Blue Plains is the largest AWTF in the world and receives 300 million gallons per day (MGD) with the ability to treat 780 MGD at peak flow.  Wastewater flows in from the District of Columbia (DC), Montgomery and Prince George’s Counties in Maryland, and Fairfax and Loudoun counties in Virginia.  The eighty dual media 52’ x 20’ filter cells are each rated up to 7.0 gallons per minute per square foot.  Kokosing Industrial is retrofitting the filters (among other work) through a construction manager at risk (CMAR) delivery method with an aggressive schedule that will complete in 2030.

Given the filter cells’ previous issues, ORTHOS Centurion monolithic reinforced concrete underdrains were selected due to their resiliency, reliability, and permanency. In now 27 years and with hundreds of installations, Centurion underdrains have never once failed, an experience no other competitor may claim. Centurion is one part of the ORTHOS Poseidon Filtration System® that is used for conventional water treatment, wastewater tertiary filtration, biologically active filtration, contactor processes, membrane pretreatment, and denitrification.

“ORTHOS is honored to provide Centurion-based filtration systems for our nation’s capital,” stated Stuart F. Humphries, Vice President – Filtration Technologies. “Many buildings and monuments in DC are made of reinforced concrete, why shouldn’t the filters that protect the fragile Potomac River be made as strong?”
